Do not use it for large directories (use a server-side combobox) or for assigning several people at once.

Accessibility

The trigger says who is assigned ("Assignee: Maya Lin", "Assignee: nobody"); the current person has aria-current and a check mark.
A polite status gives the match count and an empty search says "Nobody matches “zzz”.".
Choosing closes the popover and returns focus to the trigger; Unassign is offered only when someone is assigned.
